The herringbone gear transmits power and motion between parallel shafts that do not intersect and may or may not have a central groove with each group forming two opposite helices. The two helix angles meet at the center of the gear face to form a 'V'. In these gears, the end thrust forces cancel each other out.
The most common application is in power transmission. They use curved teeth for efficient, high-capacity power transmission. This offers reduced pulsation, making them widely used for extrusion and polymerization. Herringbone gears are primarily used in heavy machinery.
